TMJ is a condition that affects the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull.
Symptoms of TMJ can include pain or discomfort in the jaw joint, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, pain in the face, neck, or shoulders, a popping or clicking sound when opening or closing the mouth, and difficulty biting or chewing.
There are various causes of TMJ, including injury or trauma to the jaw, arthritis, teeth grinding or clenching, stress, and misalignment of the teeth or jaw.
Treatment options for TMJ vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition and aim to reduce pain, improve function and increase range of motion in the jaw. It is typically used as an alternative to invasive procedures such as surgery or corticosteroid injections. Methods may include physical therapy, medication, splints or mouth guards, behavioural therapy, botox injections and in severe cases, surgery.
