A surgical procedure allowing for
normal movement of the tongue or lip

At Kromboom Dental Centre, we offer tongue tie and lip tie assessments and removals. We treat patients as young as newborns all the way up to adults. We have a dynamic team that works hand in hand to provide the most comprehensive care to ensure your tongue and/or lip tie is addressed in the best way possible. This is done according to the guidelines set out by international medical specialists in the field.

Drs Farah Seedat, Nazier Natha, and Abdul Basit Booley have extensive training, experience, and knowledge of lasers, and are able to treat all types of tongue and lip ties. Lameez and Zainab, our Orofacial Myofunctional Therapists are specially trained individuals to diagnose and treat tongue and lip ties.

Tongue tie and lip tie refer to a condition where the tissue that connects the tongue or lip to the floor of the mouth (the frenulum) is too tight, or too short. This can restrict the movement of the tongue or lip and can cause a variety of issues such as difficulty breastfeeding, speech difficulties, and dental problems.

Tongue and lip tie removal, also known as a frenectomy, is a surgical procedure that involves the use of a laser or scissors to release the restricted tissue, allowing for normal movement of the tongue or lip. The procedure is usually done by a qualified healthcare professional such as a dentist, oral surgeon, or periodontist.

Tongue and Lip tie release can be done in different ways and with different instruments, in some cases, laser frenectomy is used, while in others, a scalpel or scissors are used. It is a minor procedure that is usually done on an outpatient basis, and recovery is usually quick. Tongue and lip tie release are not always necessary, and some other forms of treatment may be more appropriate, depending on the case. Consulting with a qualified healthcare professional, such as a Myofunctional Therapist (think of this as a physiotherapist for your mouth and airway), or your dentist, is always best for proper diagnosis and treatment.
